DESIGNER INTERVIEW: SALLY PHILLIPS
Sally Phillips is a woman who embodies elegance and creativity through her designs and persona. The Adelaide woman has built up a following from loyal clients who invest in her vision of designing well-crafted and wearable but inspiring pieces. Apart from designing, Sally has appeared as a fashion judge in numerous Australian publications. I received the opportunity to interview Sally at the 2015 Adelaide Fashion Festival Launch Announcement and was charmed by her enthusiastic personality. (I also wanted to steal the fringe skirt she was wearing over her black pants). She offered me a glimpse into this years Adelaide Fashion Festival, teased special guests who will be appearing, described the Sally Phillips unique aesthetic and revealed the garment she believes all women should have in their wardrobes.
Taylah: What can we expect from this years Adelaide Fashion Festival?
Sally: This is a much bigger production with a lot of international and interstate people coming and I think it will put Adelaide on a much more international and national base.
Taylah: How did you become involved with the Festival this year as I understand it is your first time?
Sally: I was approached about being involved and was I so excited to be a part of something on this level. There has already been so much effort put in this year so that was a big drawcard for me. Also to be involved with all the other talented designers in the state was exciting. The management is so wonderful and the new direction of the Festival is very dynamic.
Taylah: I am loving these looks today, is this the collection we will be seeing at the Fashion Festival?
Sally: Yes. However Nicole Bonython (super stylist from Sydney) will be coming over to be involved. It is a big coup for Adelaide and the designers involved this year to have her influence. She will be coming over and restyling things up.
Taylah: How did this collection come together? Who or what were you inspired by?
Sally: I kind of design what I want to wear and imagine I'm a busy mum and a lot of my clients are busy mothers. I love just thinking about what I want to wear, what I want to take on holidays, what I want to throw on that is easy in the morning. Really creating a wardrobe that is fully interactional, easy to wear and going to be really practical for people as well as inspiring and exciting.
Taylah: Describe the Sally Phillips label in three words.
Sally: Modern, yet edgy, with bold silhouettes, lots of modern takes and wearable. - (Not really three words but it was such a great answer!)
Taylah: Who is the Sally Phillips woman? What does she stand for?
Sally: The Sally Phillips woman is strong and unique. She is someone who is very busy and knows what they want with still a strong sense of self.
Taylah: What is one of your favourite pieces from the collection?
Sally: The chambray light stretch drop crotch jean.
Taylah: And finally what is one piece from the SS16 collection every woman should have in their wardrobes?
That is a good question! The one piece that suits everyone would have to be the classic blazer. It was in black for winter but will be coming in a 'chalky white' for summer and I think that it is still so perfect for both seasons because it can still be cool in December!
'Jay's Angels' as someone jokingly called out.
